Many years ago, as a young man fresh out of the university with a combined degree of Bachelor in Environmental Science and Bachelor of Architecture & Design, I set out to learn digital skills, starting with Web design, on my own. That was the beginning of a journey into tech that has resulted in a career of decades.
Sitting with a computer at a cyber cafe, day after day, I went through free tutorials and learned to code. Then I learned to manage the technical backend of websites. I went on to build one of the pioneer web hosting businesses in Nigeria and also pioneer tech blogs in Nigeria. I have never stopped learning on my own since the early 2000s when I first set out. Why am I sharing this story?
The Nigerian education system is badly lacking and unable to teach young people many of the digital skills they need to prosper in today’s world. If you want it, you must be wiling to learn it outside of the walls of the education system. You must be ready to learn the needed skills on your own (with a little help).
If you are willing and ready to learn digital skills, it is my forte and I am here to help you along the way. On the website, I am sharing every thing I learned over the years – website development, graphics, web hosting and admin, blogging, content creation, online payments, digital marketing, and more. Everything – all the tips and guides. And all out here for free. Free website content played a massive role in getting me started. Of course, I paid for some courses eventually, in order to fine-tune some skills, but I got started on free content. And, hopefully, the free content that I publish here will be helpful to you too.
It is a daunting task, but I will find a way. Why am I doing this? I recognise that there are many young people out there who are frustrated by the state of things on ground and are looking for useful information to help them get ahead and earn a honest income. My Twitter DMs is full of requests to share information that will assist people to get into tech. Unfortunately, I am unable to answer all of those requests individually; there are just too many of them.
But I can put it all out here on my website, so you can access it at your convenience. I will also be here to answer as many questions under each article as much as I can. You will bear with me, should my replies not come as fast as you would prefer. I still have to earn a living myself, and this is a side project.
Learning Digital Skills is easier today
Back in my time, I had to go to a cyber cafe each day and pay for one hour. The Internet connections were slow and expensive, and I had only one hour daily. It wasn’t the most convenient way to learn. Today, you have an Internet-connected smartphone in your hand and can access content round the clock from almost anywhere. You can dedicate anything from 3 to 10 hours daily to learning the digital skills that you need.
Why Digital Skills?
In today’s world, basic digital skills are essentials. More advanced digital skills are highly sought after and rewarding financially in every industry – education, health, law, security, agriculture, etc. You can hardly go wrong by learning a digital skill. Here are some more common digital skills:
- Data entry
- Social media marketing
- Web content creation
- Word processing and editing
- Video content creation
- Video editing
- Data analysis/processing
- Web development
- Web administration e.g. cpanel/WHM
- Software/app development
- Digital business analysis
- Digital marketing
- Digital data visualization
- Digital product management
- User experience (UX) design
- Search engine optimisation
I have had the privilege of teaching some of these in training classes over the last two decades. I consider it a privilege to share on them here and provide tips and guides to help you get started. Use the Digital Skills Library link in the navigation menu to access these articles. To kick things off, which digital skill will you like me to start off with and what about it are you interested in learning? I will start with a guide on getting started with that. Even if it is not listed above, mention it. Let me know in the comments section below.
